Governor LePage’s comment about his opposition to the ban on the toxic chemical BPA (Bisphenol-A):
“The only thing that I’ve heard is if you take a plastic bottle and put it in the microwave and you heat it up, it gives off a chemical similar to estrogen. So the worst case is some women may have little beards.”
NRCM’s response, by Lisa Pohlmann, Executive Director:
“The governor’s comment is not only ignorant, it is an insult to women and shows a callous disregard for the health of women and children.
Governor LePage doesn’t understand the science, which clearly shows that BPA attacks the brains of developing children and can set the stage for a lifetime of health problems like learning disabilities, breast and prostate cancer, reproductive damage, and diabetes.
The European Union, Canada, and eight states have already banned the use of BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups, and leading retailers, including Walmart, have removed these products from their shelves. Maine is currently proposing to do the same. Not a single Maine business showed up to testify against this proposal.
The governor appears to be siding with out-of-state chemical corporations instead of Maine’s families.”
