Thank you for the opportunity to submit comments on behalf of the Natural Resources Council of Maine (Council). The Council is a public interest, nonprofit organization that seeks to protect and conserve Maine’s environment for now and future generations. As part of the Council’s work, we advocate for clean air and energy measures, including those that reduce global warming pollution.
The Council supports LD 397 because it would support conservation and efficiency programs for natural gas users. Passage of this bill will save money for natural gas consumers in Maine, thereby keeping more of their income here at home to be available for investing into local Maine economies. As a conservation program, it will also reduce the overall price that all natural gas consumers pay here in Maine, by stabilizing and suppressing prices for that fuel – which is especially important for such a fuel whose price fluctuates periodically. Lastly, passage of this bill will reduce global warming pollution generated here in Maine by improving the efficiency of natural gas use in Maine.
