Several hundred people packed a forum in which resource-oriented businesses and activities explained the importance of a clean environment to Maine Gov. Paul LePage and his senior staff.
Those attending Thursday’s Roundtable on Maine People and the Environment in Augusta said a clean environment is vital to Maine businesses from lobstering, clamming and logging to hog farming, and businesses catering to outdoor recreationists.
Even Olympic marathon gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson, who said she’s logged 150,000 miles running on Maine roads, said she has a real appreciation for air quality in the state.
LePage said he, too, believes in strong environmental laws — but they must be based on good science and common sense.
