WESTBROOK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Since 2007 Maine has joined a cooperative market-based effort to reduce carbon pollution and invest in energy efficiency.
It’s known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, or RGGI.
The 25th carbon permit was auctioned today; the permits provide about $10-million a year for Maine to make energy efficient changes in homes or businesses.
Businesses that have benefited include Hannaford Supermarkets, which has made changes in ten retail stores and its main distribution center.
LED lights and motion sensors in their frozen food aisles and changes to their heating system help save the Westbrook store around $5-thousand a year.
