What a treat for all of us who love seeing loons on Maine’s lakes! This week’s photos were taken by NRCM member David Silva of Holden.
He writes, “A Common Loon (I prefer the Great Northern Diver) is proudly displaying her baby chicks, less than a week old. She’s giving them a rest from trying to teach them to dive, which is essential for avoiding danger and feeding on the pond. This particular one stands out from most with its remarkable size and colorful plumage. They have a strategically safe nesting site and territory, with a partial weed canopy tucked in the cove. This provides a better chance for the eggs to incubate and hatch. I took this photo around 6:00 AM on my kayak, when the pond echoed with just the soothing sounds of nature.
