Event organizers said it would be too cold on Sunday to jump into the water
The Polar Bear Dip & Dash hosted by the Natural Resources Council of Maine has cancelled the dip portion of its event Sunday.Event participants initially intended to run a 5K around Portland’s Back Cove and then take a dip into cold Casco Bay as a way to end 2017. But, due to the recent cold weather conditions, organizers said they made the decision to cancel the dip portion of the event.“This is the first time we have had to do this, but after consulting with medical professionals, we think it is just too cold to jump into the ocean this Sunday,” the NCRM said in a press release.
However, the 5K still took place at 11 a.m. as scheduled. Organizers said there would be a gathering on East End Beach after the race for a photo, hot drinks, food and music.
