First Wind has won a permit from Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection to build a wind farm in the town of Oakfield.
State environmental officials have approved a permit for a new wind farm in the Aroostook County town of Oakfield.
The project, proposed by First Wind, is expected to generate 51 megawatts of eletricity. DEP officials approved the permit yesterday for the project, which consists of 34 turbines and other infrastructure, including a substation, meteorological towers and a maintenance building.
Evergreen filed its application last April. Officials say the project meets the state’s criteria for approval, but the permit requires the company to prove that it’s complying with permit conditions through third-party inspectors and expert consultants.
First Wind also does business in the state as Evergreen Wind. The company already operates wind farms in Mars Hill and Danforth.
