Work and activity on public lands, including national monuments overseen by the National Park Service, are governed by NPS management plans.
The National Park Service has committed to completing the management plan for Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument within three years of the Monument’s designation. NPS began this process in September 2016, less than a month after the designation, with a series of public meetings. These public discussions were designed to help create an open dialogue between the park service and people in communities near the monument and throughout Maine.
The National Park Service will release a report based on the comments and suggestions at these initial meetings in Patten, Medway, Millinocket and Orono in late October 2016.
NRCM attended each meeting and we submitted comments outlining our thoughts on the management plan. We will continue to actively engage in the management planning process and keep our members and supporters up-to-date on progress, and the best ways for you to participate.
You can sign up to receive updates from the National Park Service by visiting their Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument website and clicking the “Get Involved” link.
Meanwhile, get out and enjoy that monument!
