Location: Hallowell, Kennebec County
Description: The Vaughan Woods is a 160-acre, historic conservation property near downtown Hallowell and only two miles from the State House in Augusta. There’s a two-mile loop trail through the woods, fields, ravines, stone foot bridges, and streams on the property. Although the trails are open to the public during daylight for public hiking and cross-country skiing, the property is privately owned by the Vaughan Homestead Foundation and protected by a conservation easement held by the Kennebec Land Trust. The property is a jewel well-loved by the community.
Tips: In Hallowell, park in the little lot along Litchfield Road at its intersection with Middle Street. In Farmingdale, park next to the tennis courts behind Hall-Dale High School. Trails enter the woods from both locations.
