Location: Wayne and Winthrop, Kennebec County
Description: There are two wooded trails to the top, both pretty easy (one is 0.7 miles; the other is 1.3), at this Kennebec Land Trust property. It’s great for kids. The top is mostly wooded, but there’s a very sturdy 60-foot fire tower with wonderful views.
Activities: Hiking, photography, snowshoeing
Favorite Season(s) to Visit: Spring through fall. We discovered sunny spring days can be pretty warm before the leaves come out!
Why It’s Special: I’ve enjoyed taking my small kids on the easy hike to the top for years. They love tromping across the several areas with split-log boards as the trail goes through some damper areas.
Tips: I’m afraid of heights, so much to my kids’ chagrin, I can never make it more than one-third of the way up the fire tower at the top. That’s what grandparents are for!
