The 172-acre Hunter Cove Uplands property lies right next to beautiful Rangeley Lake in Franklin County. Owned by Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust, this forest preserve’s key feature is its trail system that winds all throughout the property. This system includes two loops that vary in length but are both moderately challenging. The lower loop is shorter and uses both old logging roads and hand-cut trails, whereas the upper loop is longer and uses exclusively hand-cut trails. Attached to the upper loop is a short path that leads to a beautiful viewpoint of Rangeley Lake. This spot is a great place to picnic and rest up before beginning the journey back.
The Hunter Cove Uplands were purchased by the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust in 2010 with support from the Land for Maine’s Future program. Beyond just hiking, the property is also a great location for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and fishing. The Hunter Cove Uplands parcel is located right next to the Hunter Cove Wildlife Sanctuary, a 100-acre preserve owned by RLHT trust since 2004.
