Canaan Bog by Susan MacKenzie
Chosen By: Susan MacKenzie, former NRCM Board member
Name of Place: Canaan Bog, Somerset County
Location: Canaan carry-in boat launch, off Route 2 between Skowhegan and Pittsfield.
Description: Long, narrow, winding waterway through a 200+/- acre bog. Passable by canoe or kayak, with some portages or pullovers on low beaver dams.
Favorite Season(s) to Visit: Spring, when the water is high and spring birds are back!
Why It’s Special: A good variety of warblers, sandpipers, and ducks can be seen at every turn, and snapping turtles, painted turtles, green and wood frogs, and beavers are present. It’s very quiet and peaceful.
Tips: You can travel under the bridge and enter Sibley Pond, a larger, deeper lake that is also lovely.
