The Natural Resources Council of Maine today called for support of a proposed Environmental Protection Agency rule to lower the amount of CO2 America’s power plants can release into the atmosphere.
At a press conference in Portland, NRCM Outreach Coordinator Todd Martin said climate change caused, in part, by CO2 emissions is creating friendly conditions for “pest” organisms like poison ivy, jellyfish, mosquitoes, and especially ticks.
“It’s pretty clear that the time to act on climate change is now, if we hope to avoid the rapid expansion of pest species here in Maine and nationwide, in order to preserve the outdoor experience and the outdoor activities we know and love today,” Martin said.
The proposed EPA rule, called the Clean Power Plan, would, for the first time, put a legal limit on carbon emissions by power plants.
