To tell my story in a compelling and seasonally appropriate way, I was planning to upload and show the part of It’s a Wonderful Life where George Bailey jumps into the river. Because that’s what I’ll be doing on New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately, that would constitute copyright infringement under 17 USC para. 501, according to the strongly worded letter I recently received from Warner Brothers’ law firm.
But that doesn’t mean that on New Year’s Eve I won’t be emulating George Bailey: jumping into freezing cold water at exactly the wrong time of year in a desperate bid to save something important. In my case, it’s not the Building and Loan, it’s our planet. Something we all have a stake in.
The Natural Resources Council of Maine is hosting our 5th annual Polar Plunge to raise money for our climate change advocacy. This is the 4th year that I am plunging into the balmy waters of Casco Bay to raise money for this important work. I hope you’ll pledge a gift in support of my plunge.
You can join us at Portland’s East End Beach at noon on New Year’s Eve. You can also build up a head of steam by running in our 5k before you plunge!
If you prefer, you can pledge your favorite polar bear—and I hope that’s me! Thanks—and hope to see you December 31!
