Extending the Season.
Although farmer's markets in Maine have more to offer in the winter than you might think (several Maine farms grow fresh greens through the winter in hoophouses), the pickings can get pretty slim. Get the Ball Blue Book and learn how to preserve the local produce by canning, freezing and drying.

Did You Know?
Although canning food requires more time on the stovetop than blanching food for freezing, in the end it uses much less energy because of the electricity required to run the freezer.

Downsize.
If you are buying a new refrigerator, question whether you really need such a big one. Many of the items that people keep in their fridge - such as ketchup and peanut butter - really don't need to be there.

Unless your child wishes to create something special, save the paper - encourage him or her to exercise his or her artistic talents with a chalkboard and chalk or a whiteboard and dry erase markers.

The Great Diaper Debate.
Disposable diapers can stay in landfills for as long as 700 years, but diaper services drive trucks all over town and wash diapers in up to seven changes of boiling hot water. It's a difficult decision - but remember that the energy used to maintain cloth diapers can be produced sustainably, while it's practically impossible to have a clean, biodiverse landfill!
