Federal policies can have serious impacts here in Maine, affecting our ability to protect our rivers from pollution, ensure safe drinking water, and maintain our state parks. NRCM works with Maine's Congressional delegation and with others on national environmental issues that affect the people, environment, and wildlife of our state. |

Federal Mercury Policies & MaineMercury is a toxic pollutant that rains down into Maine’s waterways from out-of-state power plants, contaminating fish and putting our children’s health at risk. NRCM is committed to making sure our Congressional delegation takes into account state-level policy implications that affect Maine’s people and environment. |

Arctic National Wildlife RefugeNRCM is a strong voice working for protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Protection of the Arctic helps ensure protection of natural areas elsewhere – including in Maine - from the harm caused by oil exploration. It also sends a clear message to Washington that our nation’s current energy policies are not working, that we should adopt policies for clean, renewable energy sources. |

Federal Energy PoliciesThe nation’s energy policies have a tremendous impact on the health of Maine people and environment. NRCM works hard for federal initiatives that put the health of our environment and children first. |

Other Federal IssuesNational environmental policies continue to have a big impact on the quality of life in Maine. The Clean Water Act, for example, has helped ensure cleaner rivers. But these laws come under frequent attack by industries that put profits over the health and safety of people. NRCM works hard to prevent roll-backs to existing federal legislation put in place to protect our children. |
In-Depth Project Description
As an independent, Maine-based nonprofit organization working to protect our environment, most of NRCM’s legislative work takes place here in Maine. But because federal policies can have serious impacts here, NRCM also works with Maine's Congressional delegation on national environmental issues that affect the people, environment, and wildlife of our state.
Maine’s Senator Olympia Snowe and Senator Susan Collins often cast deciding votes to preserve our nation’s landmark environmental protections from well funded industry attempts to render them useless. NRCM works to ensure that they and their staff remain informed of current threats to Maine’s people and environment so that they can vote appropriately.
Federal policies on pollution also can affect the health and safety of Maine’s environment and people. Mercury is a toxic pollutant that rains down into Maine’s waterways from out-of-state power plants, contaminating fish and putting our children at risk of neurological impairments and learning disabilities.
Federal policies govern mercury emissions and other hazardous pollutants from power plants. That’s why NRCM is committed to making sure our Congressional delegation takes into account state-level policy implications that affect Maine’s people and environment.
