Wind Power Task Force Submits Report

A high-level state task force that has drafted a plan to make Maine a leader in wind power is presenting its report to Gov. John Baldacci at the State House today.
Baldacci created the Governor’s Task Force on Wind Power Development last year to explore Maine’s potential for wind farms and recommend ways to encourage more development. The task force report will set a new goal of 3,000 megawatts of wind energy – at least 1,000 turbines statewide – by 2020. The state now has 42 megawatts.
The task force also is recommending that most of the state be included in a new zone in which wind turbines proposals would receive expedited regulatory review. It also is recommending new standards for considering visual impacts on scenic areas of state and national significance, such as parks or unique landscapes.
The report is expected to quickly be turned into legislative proposals to be acted on this winter or spring.
