So tranquil and quiet, early summer mornings on Pierce Pond are what makes me appreciate living in such a beautiful state.
December 24 was chosen as the Damariscotta/Pemaquid Christmas Bird Count for 2005. Five of us did the Friendship sector the morning after a light but effectively picturesque snowfall. This photograph was taken at the trip leader’s house in Waldoboro at sunrise. The Christmas Bird Count is what we obsessive birders do to keep tabs on the populations of birds from one year to the next. We go out in a specified area and count 'em - literally - for pretty much all day. It's great to be with expert birders who can identify birds you can't. And to know that you look weird with a group rather than just weird by yourself, peering into people's yards and have folk peer suspiciously back at you through their windows. It is also gratifying to see how many people have bird feeders. We counted 42 species in our sector that day - a very successful one.

A Different View: I couldn't resist snapping a shot of this gull taking in the view while sitting atop the coin-operated viewer at Wells Beach. It struck me as ironic, like the gull was purposely trying to be a little defiant!

We live along the Penobscot River and see Bald Eagles fairly often but I've never had such a good opportunity for a photograph.

The picture was taken on August 18, 2005 at Spencer Pond Camps, in the Moosehead Lake area. The moose is a 2 year old named Penelope (as named by the SPC hosts, Bob Croce & Jill Martel). Penelope ambled by our cabin early one morning. We were very lucky to see her right out our window. I would hate to think what will happen to Penelope should the proposed Plum Creek development open a RV park across the pond from SPC.
I like this picture because it shows buds on a tree, and you can only get pictures like this once a year, in the spring. This picture was taken in Sabattus at my Grammie and Grampa's house on March 4th. The thing I like best about Maine is that there is a lot of stuff to do outside in Maine each season of the year.

I couldn't resist this perfect moment, I knew that thirty seconds later the entire scene would change, I knew it would be brief so I ran and grabbed my Canon and took at least 20 photos as fast as I could to capture the beautiful colors and cloud shapes. -
I've heard Maine in the fall is such a beautiful time. This was my first experience and I have to say I can't wait for more. As a photographer it was a breathtaking experience and truly unforgettable.

I was a camper for 7 years at Camp Walden in Denmark, and my dream was to have a house there—I can literally canoe or make a very long swim to Walden. My happiest moments are up in Maine: I go down to the dock early every morning to watch the loons, mergansers, tree swallows, and other birds on the lake, sometimes great blues and a bald eagle, and many goldfinch.

This is a picture of Tufts Pond in Kingfield in winter, spring, summer, and fall. It is close to Deerfarm Camps and campground which my wife and I frequent often.

The Port Clyde to Monhegan ferry Elizabeth Ann approaching Monhegan. Monhegan Island is one of Maine's premier birding sites in addition to being a world famous artists' colony.
Atlantic Puffin photographed on Eastern Egg Rock Island. Hunting had eliminated puffins on this and other islands by the late 1800's. In 1973 the National Audubon Society began Project Puffin (http://www.projectpuffin.org), a program that has successfully returned puffins to several of Maine's islands.
This photo was taken in Bremen, just off the shore by the dock across from the Audubon camp. This was our first trip to Maine. We had a great time!
This was just so cute: a female moose eating lupines. Apparently they look good and taste good, too. Taken near Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley.

Collapsible Zane. HABITAT HABITAT HABITAT. It's disappearing but backyards can make a huge difference. My plantings in Orono are native-to-Maine and/or for the birds, bees and butterflies. This photo is of my one year old son helping me garden. If you don't want to plant in the ground - plant in a suitcase! There's one to the right of Zane and two in my front yard. All passersby seem to love them. You can also see some broken pieces of pottery and plates, again, re-use and recycle. My husband and I moved from NYC two years ago and we can't get over how lovely it is here and we will continue to do all in our power to save, protect and enjoy the nature of Maine.

This photo was taken from the east side of the causeway on Crocket Ridge Road in Norway. I've called it Reflections from the Causeway. The foliage in Maine this year was extremely brilliant I think!
The view from the summit of Katahdin is especially beautiful on a clear day in the autumn. Quite a reward for my 17-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, and me on a cold, windy day!
Pemaquid.
The photo was taken in mid July on Wilson Lake in Wilton using a 420mm lens and then heavily cropping the result. I did not want to upset mother.
This was taken at 7 a.m. on East Carry Pond, along the Appalachian Trail in mid-September. The mirror-like stillness of the water created the awesome 'double sun' effect and the serenity of the moment was broken only by the morning calls of loons.
Boating on the river can be very relaxing, and provides excellent perspectives not otherwise enjoyed. This is a picture of Doubling Point Light, just below the shipyard on the Kennebec, and was captured in August of this year.
While on an annual moose chase (with cameras only), we almost never get the wildlife pics we want but always get some great landscapes. This was from Daicey Pond Camps, of Katahdin.
