In-Depth Description
Mercury is a serious toxic metal and a potent neurotoxin. It attacks the developing brains of infants and children, causing brain damage and developmental problems in children. It has also been linked to health problems in adults. Yet it remains a pervasive pollutant.
Maine's rivers, lakes, and streams are so contaminated by mercury that the Department of Health has issued fish consumption warnings. NRCM has successfully led efforts resulting in legislation eliminating many sources of mercury within the state. Since much of Maine's mercury contamination comes from out-of-state powerplants, our work at the federal level is a vital component to NRCM's strategy. (See Washington Watch).
NRCM has successfully worked for legislation eliminating many sources of mercury within the state. But there is still much more to be done. We will continue our work on this issue until our children, wildlife, and environment are safe from mercury pollution.
