Federal Mercury Issues and Maine

Mercury is a toxic pollutant that rains down into Maine’s waterways from out-of-state power plants, contaminating fish and putting our children’s health at risk. NRCM is committed to making sure our Congressional delegation takes into account state-level policy implications that affect Maine’s people and environment.

In-Depth Description

Mercury is a toxic pollutant that rains down into Maine’s waterways from out-of-state power plants, contaminating fish and putting our children at risk of neurological impairments and learning disabilities. Maine people are warned to severely limit consumption of fish from our rivers, lakes, and streams.

NRCM has been a leader in reducing sources of mercury within the state. The biggest mercury threat to Maine’s people and environment must be addressed at the federal level.

Federal policies govern mercury emissions and other hazardous pollutants from power plants. Well funded lobbyists for the industry continue to work to make sure the Bush administration continues protect power plant profits rather than Maine’s—and our nation’s—children. That is why NRCM is committed to making sure our Congressional delegation takes into account state-level policy implications that affect Maine’s people and environment. We know from experience that keeping watch on Washington helps ensure accountability to the people of Maine.
