In-Depth Description
NRCM helped lead a coalition of 300 businesses, associations, and organizations promoting funding for the Land for Maine's Future (LMF) program, which has protected public access to Maine's natural areas in all 16 counties.
Our work to build support for LMF, established in 1987, has protected hundreds of thousands of acres of Maine land, ensuring recreational opportunities, open space, water access, farmland and wildlife habitat throughout Maine.
Only six percent of Maine land is in public ownership—one of the lowest percentages in the country. Meanwhile, development pressures have never been greater, and public access for traditional recreation and other uses is decreasing. There could not be a more urgent time for a land bond in support of Land for Maine’s Future.
Maine voters have consistently approved land bonds, starting with the initial $35 million in 1987. Funding was replenished in 1998 with $3 million and 1999 with $50 million. Now funding has run dry, making our lands more vulnerable to development by real estate companies.
In November 2005, NRCM worked hard as a member of the Land Bond Coalition to secure $10 million to enable the State to purchase more wildlife habitat, working farms, and other areas that make Maine so special. The additional funds approved by voters will help replenish this vital program.
NRCM will continue to listen to the voices of Maine people and will continue working to secure funding for the Land for Maine’s Future program, so that future generations will enjoy the Maine we know today.
