Stopping Harmful Bills

National environmental policies continue to have a big impact on the quality of life in Maine. The Clean Water Act, for example, has helped ensure cleaner rivers. But these laws come under frequent attack by industries that put profits over the health and safety of people. NRCM works hard to prevent roll-backs to existing federal legislation put in place to protect our children.

In-Depth Description

Decisions made at the federal level have a serious effect on the people of Maine. Maine has done its part, for example, to address mercury pollution from sources within its borders. But pollution knows no borders. Maine people will continue to be threatened by mercury poison because the biggest source of mercury pollution in Maine are out-of-state power plants—and the federal government has chosen to put the interests of polluters ahead of the health of our children.

The intentions of the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and other signature legislation put in place to protect the health of our people and environment continue to be at risk. High-priced lobbyists are a constant force at the federal level, trying relentlessly to roll backs existing legislation to increase bottom-line profits for some of the nation’s biggest polluters.

NRCM works diligently to watchdog harmful roll-backs to legislation that affects Maine’s environment. The voice of Maine people needs to be heard in Washington on issues affecting our waters, air, and land. NRCM is that voice for Maine.
